What is Berat Kandili?

The word “Berat” means acquittal, freedom from sin, and divine pardon. This night, known as the 15th night of Sha’ban, is also called the “Night of Decree.” According to Islamic scholars, the events of the coming year, including provisions, life spans, and fate-related matters, are recorded in the Preserved Tablet (Lawh al-Mahfuz) on this night.

What Happens on Berat Night? The Significance of This Night

Berat Kandili is known as a night of forgiveness and mercy when Allah forgives His servants. According to narrations, on this night, the “Tablets of Fate” are written, and the significant events of the upcoming year are determined. Zamakhshari (Rahimahullah) states that on this night, a one-year decree is established and entrusted to the following four great angels: • Mikail (A.S.) – Takes charge of provisions. • Jibrail (A.S.) – Takes charge of matters related to wars. • Ismail (A.S.) – Takes charge of natural disasters, lightning, and earthquakes. • Azrail (A.S.) – Takes charge of deaths and illnesses.

It is also believed that the Qur’an was revealed from the Preserved Tablet to the lowest heaven on this night. Berat Kandili follows Regaib and Miraj Kandili in the sacred months and is considered a herald of the blessed month of Ramadan.

When is Berat Kandili in 2025?

In 2025, Berat Kandili will be observed on the night of Thursday, February 13, 2025. This night, occurring in Sha’ban, the second of the three holy months, marks a spiritual preparation phase for Ramadan. What Should Be Done on Berat Kandili?

Acts of worship recommended for Berat Night include: • Performing Berat Kandili Prayers The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encouraged offering voluntary (nafl) prayers on this night. Tasbih prayer and Hajat prayer can be performed. • Reciting the Qur’an Reciting Surah Yasin, Surah Al-Fath, and Surah Ad-Dukhan is highly recommended. • The Prophet’s Supplication for Berat Night The Prophet (PBUH) made the following supplication on this night: “O Allah! I seek refuge in Your forgiveness from Your punishment, in Your pleasure from Your wrath. I seek refuge in You from You. I cannot praise You enough; You are as You have praised Yourself.” • Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness Reciting “Astaghfirullah” (I seek forgiveness from Allah) abundantly is recommended for cleansing from sins. • Fasting on Berat Night It is advised to fast on the 13th, 14th, and 15th of Sha’ban. Fasting on the day before Berat Kandili is a recommended Sunnah. • Giving Charity and Helping Others Helping the poor, engaging in charitable deeds, feeding the needy, and giving alms bring great rewards on this night. • Sending Salawat upon the Prophet Sending blessings (salawat) upon the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is among the most virtuous acts of worship on this night.

Acts of Worship on Berat Night

On this night, Muslims should engage in prayer, remembrance of Allah (dhikr), and supplication as much as possible. • Performing Berat Kandili Prayer Islamic scholars have recommended a 100-unit (raka’ah) prayer, reciting Surah Al-Fatiha once and Surah Al-Ikhlas 10 times in each unit. • Reciting Dhikr and Tasbih Saying “Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi subhanallahil azim” (Glory and praise be to Allah, the Most Great) is a recommended tasbih. • Repenting and Seeking Forgiveness This night is an excellent opportunity to repent and seek Allah’s forgiveness.

Supplications for Berat Night

Here are some supplications that can be recited on this blessed night: • “Allahumma innaka afuwwun karimun tuhibbul-afwa fa’fu anni.” (O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, Most Generous, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me.) • “Rabbana atina fiddunya hasanatan wa fil akhirati hasanatan wa qina azaban-nar.” (Our Lord, grant us goodness in this world and goodness in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.)

The Virtues of Berat Kandili

The virtues of Berat Night are highlighted in hadiths as follows:

“When the fifteenth night of Sha’ban arrives, spend the night in worship and fast during the day. For on this night, after sunset, Allah descends to the lowest heaven and declares: ‘Is there anyone seeking forgiveness so that I may forgive them? Is there anyone asking for sustenance so that I may provide for them? Is there anyone in distress so that I may grant them relief?’”
