Visually Impaired Students Learn the Qur’an in Uganda

Çare Derneği continues to illuminate the lives of visually impaired individuals in Uganda. In the Isar Orphanage located in the Wakiso region, a Braille Qur’an education program for 50 visually impaired students was successfully completed.

During the 150-hour training program, specially designed Braille Qur’ans made from thick cardboard were used. In Uganda, where 2.1 million visually impaired people reside, approximately 2,700 of them are Muslim and have had limited access to Qur’anic education.

Successful Educational Outcomes

According to Emre Olgay, Çare Derneği’s Uganda Country Director, students first learned the Braille alphabet before progressing to reading the Qur’an by touch. With the support of TİKA and the International Braille Qur’an Foundation, Braille Qur’ans and educational materials were provided to the students throughout the training.

Heartwarming Spiritual Transformations

One of the most touching outcomes of this project was the spiritual impact it had on some of the students. Several Christian students who participated in the program embraced Islam. The transformation of Benjamin into Bünyamin is a testament to the profound influence of this initiative.

Messages from the Students

One of the students, 20-year-old Omar, expressed his emotions with these words:

“Now, I can read the Qur’an by touch, and I want to share what I have learned with others.”

Future Goals

Çare Derneği aims to expand this successful educational model to other African countries. Halis Kurulay, President of the International Braille Qur’an Foundation, emphasized that the project has significantly contributed to the inclusion of visually impaired individuals in social life.
